The thread in the general discussion about 'Drive AMP' got me thinking about stuff that might benefit both the volunteer ARRCA marshals and the paid folks that do track days, schools and the like. Would it be reasonable for us to ask for some repairs to the stands?

I'm thinking safety-related stuff here, primarily. The turn one stairs injured Don a few years back and nearly took Paul out again at the superbikes. Some of the other stairs are shaky and/or difficult to access (2 and 9 come to mind here). And the platforms at 3, 10 and 11 are all old, with loose boards and the like. Maybe I'm turning into a safety nerd in my old age, but I really think the possibility of injury exists as a result of these infrastructure issues and we should get some of the known problems fixed before they hurt someone.

And I hate to bring up liability arguments, but it's probably even more important to think about this stuff now that paid staff use the stands so much. Can you imagine the poo that would fly from the occupational health and safety folks if a paid employee were to hurt themselves on the job because of AMP's negligence in maintaining a safe place of employment?

Anyway, I'm just throwing this out as a feeler. Maybe I'm way off base, but I think it's something we should be thinking about. And if there's money available from a fundraiser, this might be a good time to mention the issues to the poobahs the run the place.

Not a safety concern, but having roofs on the other marshal stands would be wonderful.

We got a list of stuff we need fixed, including most of what you've mentioned, Mitch! The plan was to get something going this weekend during the cancelled chump car event, but it's looking like the gross weather might nix that.

We will be looking at fixing most if the aforementioned things pretty soon, but we need to plan things out and purchase materials too, which would have been harder on shorter notice. It is in the works though!!

Thanks Nate! Good to hear I'm not the only one thinking about this.

Just for the record, I think we should have someone who knows what they are doing fix the various sets of stairs though. They are the most dangerous things out there, and are governed by all sorts of codes that I'm not familiar with from an occupational health and safety perspective. The hack job repairs we have been making ourselves just don't cut it, IMHO.

Yeah, and like you said - 1, 2, and 9 are the big priorities with the stairs. I'd also like to put handrails on everywhere that doesn't have them already, like 7. We want to build a new stand for 3, put the roof on 6 and a new stand at 10. Also, we need to come up with a solution for 1 and it's missing roof so that it won't try and become a glider. There is a much larger plan in the works for 11. We can't really build anything more substantial there without reconfiguring the walls and such because some cars have found their way on the inside.

There was also a few plans to do some minor touch ups on certain stands, plus the addition of flag holders on each stand. It's just finding an available weekend to actually go out and get things measured and planned, then go out and build it.
